(Yahoo!) The ESPYs are, at most times, an all-but-irrelevant exercise in self-promotion and self-congratulation. But every so often, the show rises above the cringeworthy and touches on something deeper. On Wednesday night, the St. Louis Rams' Michael Sam and ESPN Sportscenter anchor Stuart Scott provided two meaningful, inspirational moments in their speeches accepting awards.
Sam spoke of how he hopes to use the example of the late Arthur Ashe to inspire others:
Scott, who has battled cancer for several years, spoke of the challenges in fighting and the determination to beat cancer by living well:
Outstanding work on both accounts. More than makes up for Drake's hosting. Well done, gentlemen.
